Sooner or later we all choose or had to book the first trip by plane. It is not always easy to face the new adventures and in the case of the first flight, it is possible that you may be caught by the fear of flying, by the anxiety of suffering from air sickness or not knowing exactly how to organize and where to start before facing the departure.

That’s why in this article we will propose a series of useful tips to deal with the first flight and to manage the needs and times expected from air travel. The main information you need to know is that you will not be able to forget your identity document for national and European flights and your passport for intercontinental flights.

First time by plane tips

Air travel is the safest means of transport in the world and nowadays reaching intercontinental destinations has become possible and if decided in time with some shrewdness not even so expensive.

Our advice is, if you could choose, to reach a national or European destination and thus approach the first flight gradually. If you have decided to leave for a weekend or at least for a few days and you know that you will be able to put everything you need in your hand luggage, it will be good to inform yourself about the rules of the airline of your flight concerning precisely the measures of hand luggage.

If you are reckless and the desire to reach your dream destination wins over everything, you can also fly for the first time on the other side of the world, but just know that you will need a passport and possibly use different travel apps to plan trips, save on flights, accommodation and holiday home. Moreover, if you have babies to take with you in the air and you have no idea how air travel works for them, you should know that each company has its own rules and therefore you will have to consult them according to the circumstances.

To spend time and forget that this is your first flight, you can be distracted by reading some magazines of your interest, some good books or listening to good music. Remember that you will not be able to access any internet or wifi in flight.

– Before leaving, it is important to check on the airline’s website the rules for hand luggage: weight, size and type of items that you can take on board. For example, as far as liquids are concerned, they may only be carried in hand luggage in containers not exceeding 100 ml, in a transparent and re-sealable plastic bag. In this section you can find information about the hand luggage allowed on our flights; if you have flights in continuation we recommend you to check the websites of other airlines.

– Arriving at the airport early (at least 2 hours in advance) will allow you to manage check-in and boarding on your first flight with peace of mind, without anxiety and possible last-minute unforeseen events.

– Check in online if possible. If you are travelling with hand baggage only, you can check in online and print or download your boarding pass to go directly to the security checkpoints. This will save you valuable time once you are at the airport and allow you to reach the gate with ease. For more information please visit the dedicated page.

– Set the airplane mode on your mobile phone, or other network-connected devices you will be taking on board. The onboard staff will remind you of this step before takeoff. With the airplane mode set, you can still take pictures of your unforgettable journey and also enjoy the in-flight entertainment system! To find out more, visit the dedicated section.

– If you suffer from air sickness… you will only discover it during your first flight! To prevent your first time on the plane from being disturbed, we recommend that you take natural remedies, such as tablets or ginger chewing gum, a plant believed to have an anti-nausea effect, or have your doctor prescribe antihistamines with a sedative effect.

– Enjoy the view! By choosing a seat by the window you can see breathtaking landscapes and take some photos of the expanses of soft white clouds that you will fly over.

– Try to take a nap! Sleeping on an airplane will make time go by faster and you’ll get to your destination calm and rested.
